Fred started his teaching career in Owen Sound at Strathcona Senior Public School for over 35 years. He loved teaching and working with young students with his scientific knowledge. Some of his favorite moments in teaching were his winter survival electives taking his students winter camping to Lindenwood School house. He was a very respected and popular teacher with everyone. Fred was an avid outdoors person loving his hunting and fishing adventures. Fred was among the elite of conservationists in Ontario serving as a director with The Ontario Federation of Angler and Hunters, volunteering as Co-Chair for over 30 years with the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular, director on the Sydenham Sportsman’s Association, Co-Chair with the O.F.A.H Conservation dinner and President of the Sydenham Conservation Foundation. He worked tirelessly for most of his life as a conservationist to better the local environment and Owen Sound Area. He was instrumental in obtaining the Hibou Conservation Area for many to enjoy. His exceptional knowledge of fisheries and the outdoors helped create the Fish Hatchery Program for the success that it is today in Georgian Bay. He has been honored with Conservationist of the Year award several times and most recently he was awarded the Owen Sound Senior of the year. Our community would not be such an amazing place without volunteers like Fred.
We want to thank Dr. Tweedie, Dr. Cornfield and Dr. Anjum for their overwhelming support with helping Fred with his courageous battle with cancer. We also want to thank Fred’s daughters Kim, Kelly and son, Craig for their unbelievable nursing support to allow Dad to have one of his final requests to be at home.
Fred is now enjoying the bounties of nature pheasant hunting with his late German short hair Twig in heaven.
