It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hilary Marianne Durie on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at the Meaford Hospital at the age of 90.
Hilary will be greatly missed by her husband Ross, her son Andrew (Jennifer) and grandchildren Keegan and Elise.
She was predeceased by her daughter Wendy.
Hilary is survived by her sister Beryl (Deddington, England) and Beryl’s daughter Heather (London, England).
She was predeceased by her parents Clement and Elsie Goodway of Birmingham, England.
Hilary immigrated to Canada in 1953 after sailing on her own from England on the Empress of Australia. She met and married Ross Durie in 1955. After starting a family in Weston, they embarked on an adventure, buying a farm in the Beaver Valley where they lived for 30 years, until retiring to Meaford.
Hilary was always known as the life of the party. She participated enthusiastically for many years as a line dancer and instructor. She enjoyed Aquafit and playing in the Meaford Kazoo Band. She enjoyed travelling to Florida during the colder months with her niece Heather. More recently, she made several trips to her son’s cottage in P.E.I., which became a favourite summer pastime. Hilary never had trouble “working the room” and made friends wherever she travelled. She never turned down a lunch date with close friends. She will be remembered as a caring member of the community who was always willing to help friends in their times of need. We will all miss her sense of humour and outgoing and cheerful personality.
The family would like to thank the network of fabulous health care professionals who supported Hilary in the last months of her life including: The cancer care team at RVH, Dr. Remillard and his care team, the staff at Campbell House in Collingwood where Hilary received some respite care, Home and Community Support Services of Grey Bruce, and finally Dr. Wong, Dr. Klages, Dr. Hudson and the wonderful staff at the Meaford Hospital where Hilary lived the last weeks of her life with the best care possible.
Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be conducted at the Ferguson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Meaford Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.
