Lloyd Alexander Miller

Dr. Lloyd Alexander Miller, 84, died on December 30th. He was born and raised on a farm between Flesherton and Markdale, Ontario. With the support of his Uncle Bill, Lloyd became the first person in his family to attend university. While at Ontario Veterinary College, Guelph, he met his wife, Marian, at the curling rink. Lloyd graduated in 1962, and moved to Markdale, where he joined the practice of Dr. Roy Moore. In 1965, Lloyd and his family moved to LaPlata, Maryland, where he worked at the University of Maryland, in the Animal Health Department. In 1968, the political situation and the pull of being back on the farm prompted their return to Canada where Lloyd set up a veterinary practice on a farm near Chatsworth. For 33 years, the farmers of Grey and Bruce knew they could count on Lloyd to answer their calls day and night, to care for their animals, and to provide counsel beyond veterinary science. Lloyd and his friend, Tony, shared a love of hockey and were fans of the Attack and Platers from their start in Owen Sound. In retirement, Lloyd continued to farm, took piano lessons, and enjoyed being “Papa” to his granddaughters, Sophie and Camille. We will miss Lloyd’s humour, his diagrams of operations, inventions, and the dinner-time phone conversations including gory medical details.
Lloyd is mourned by his loving wife of 58 years Marian (nee Biggar), of Chatsworth, and their children Mary Jane, Marlene, and Alexander Miller (Lucy Xamin) all of Toronto. Proud “Papa” to his granddaughters Sophia and Camille. Dear brother of Gordon Miller (Nina), and brother-in-law of Barbara McGill (Wayne), Nancy Goldie-Miles, and Norman Biggar. Predeceased by his parents Alexander and Lila (Boyd), sister Thelma Lemon (Allan), and in-laws Gordon Miles, Sandi Biggar, Harold and Isabel Biggar.
Our special thanks to the staff for their compassionate care at Lee Manor in Owen Sound where Lloyd lived for the past 3 years. We also thank Dr. VanZyl and the nursing staff at Grey-Bruce Regional Hospital for their care, and Joanne Reid and Dr. Beck at the Diabetic Clinic.
Cremation has taken place and arrangements have been entrusted to the Garafraxa Hill Funeral Home, Chatsworth Ontario. A celebration of Lloyd’s life will be announced at a future date.
