With great sadness we announce that on Monday, November 1, 2021 we lost our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. With his family beside him, at the age of 74, Orville left us to be with his Lord.
Cherished husband of Mary (nee Cruickshank) for 52 years. Loving father of David (Lynn) and Carol Ann (Carl). Proud grandfather of Emma, Keagan, Leah and Mya. Orville will be sadly missed by his brothers Ken (Sandra), Allan (Pat, 2017) and Brian. Predeceased by his brother, Ron (Sue) and his parents Jack and Irene. He will be dearly remembered by his sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law as well as nieces and nephews.
For many years, Orville drove for Sprung Transport, to destinations in the Canadian West, Ontario, Quebec and the East coast. Previous to that, he drove for Angel Brothers Trucking. He was qualified as a hoisting engineer and a power shovel operator and, early in his career, he operated a power shovel for Rathwell and Wain.
Orville enjoyed working in the bush, cutting wood for the outdoor furnace. He was handy at doing many things: maintenance and repairs on trucks and home renovations. Although shy as a teenager, he became quite outgoing and enjoyed the friendship of many who dropped in at the shop. He loved music, especially Gospel.
After retirement, Orville and Mary travelled to Hawaii, Panama, Australia, New Zealand, China, and Alaska. They enjoyed many Caribbean cruises.
Over a number of years, Orville fought cancer with surgeries, chemo and a positive, fighter’s attitude.
Friends will be received at the Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, Owen Sound, 519-376-7492, on Friday, November 5th, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. All guests must wear a mask and follow social distancing protocols. A private service to celebrate Orville’s life will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, November 6th. Although private, a video recorded version of the service will be posted to Orville’s memorial webpage shortly thereafter. Interment will take place at a later date in Hillcrest Cemetery, Tara. All are welcome to attend an informal gathering at Orville’s shop, starting at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 6th.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Transport for Christ or to The Grey Bruce Regional Hospital oncology department would be appreciated and can be made through the funeral home. Online condolences can be sent to Orville’s family by visiting his memorial webpage at www.woodfuneralhome.ca.
