Ronald Scales, 87, passed away peacefully with family members at his side on May 10th, 2024. Born October 19th, 1936, Ron married his high school sweetheart Viola Filsinger and they were happily married for 65+ years. Father of Cindy (Bruce), Karen, and Michael. Brother to younger sister Jean Hopkins (Ron).
Predeceased by younger brother Leonard Scales (Marydale), and mother Fanny and father Charlie Scales.
Brother-in-Law to Dorothy Boyes (Mervin), Delores McAfee (Alvin), Velma Miller (Harland), Mark Filsinger (Theresa), Jean Whalen (Paul), Frieda Hillier (Al), Ken Filsinger, Marj Herman (Gerry), and Paul Filsinger (Sharon).
Born and raised in Egremont in a farmhouse with no electricity and running water, Ronald worked tirelessly on their farm and many of the surrounding farms and Rolling Acres Ranch. He taught at a nearby schoolhouse S.S. #8 Egremont for 2 years followed by teachers’ college and university in Toronto. Ron taught Industrial Arts in Toronto before he and Vi relocated to Owen Sound and he taught at Dufferin and Hillcrest school for 35 years in total. During his 35 years of retirement, he was a handyman for many residents of Wilder’s Lake and Owen Sound, and a master tinker on his many cars, lawnmowers, and chainsaws which he used endlessly to saw and chop up wood to keep Vi warm.
Ron always stuck to his morals and principles, and lived the peaceful life at the lake that he always wanted. His calm, wise, humorous, and generous nature affected everyone around him.
There will be a Celebration of Life held at the Durham Community Centre and Arena on July 20th, 2024, starting at 2 P.M. There will be a greeting line with Ron’s family members to start, followed by food and drinks, and stories with good laughs and fond memories of Ron. If you would like to share a few memories of Ron with everyone, please email klscales@rogers.com to be added to the itinerary, or to have your story read by us.
Donations would be appreciated to the wonderful Chapman House Hospice in Owen Sound, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
