Our precious mom joined dad in heaven today to finally start their long awaited true love waltz once again. The family of Veronica Fleischmann (nee Hanslip) of Durham, are saddened to announce her passing at SBGHC-Chesley, on Wednesday March 9, 2022, at the age of 88. Loving wife of 65 years to Josef (John) Fleischmann, who predeceased her February 22. Dear mother of Debbie Tanner (Steven) of Hanover and Susan Mullin (Jim) of Feversham. Cherished Gramma of Marilyn and Joel Mullin, and four fur-babies. Fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Charles William and Bertha Louise Hanslip (nee Taylor), siblings Dels Hanslip (Joyce), Vina Sweeney (Michael), John Hanslip and Iris Thomas (Harold) and brother-in-law Hans Fleischmann (Elizabeth).
John and Veronica sailed from Liverpool England, on the Empress of Britain ship, to Canada in July of 1957. They travelled to Durham Ontario, where they joined John’s brother Hans in a General Motors dealership. Shortly thereafter, John and Veronica became the sole owners of Saugeen Motors Chevrolet Oldsmobile. They operated the business for 64 years, being the last new car dealership of seven in operation when they began, and possibly the longest serving business under original ownership in town. They were both very active in the Durham community, including having served with the Durham Curling Club, Durham Chamber of Commerce, Kinsmen/Kinette Club, Trinity Anglican Church, Durham Girls Drum & Bugle Corps, and as transportation managers for the Durham Huskies Senior A hockey team. They immensely enjoyed their ballroom dancing with the Hanover Harmony Dance Club.
Cremation has taken place and arrangements have been entrusted to the Garafraxa Hill Funeral Home, Chatsworth, Ontario. A celebration of Veronica and Josef’s life will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, Durham, in the late spring, date TBA. If desired, donations to South Bruce Grey Health Services (Durham or Chesley sites) or Trinity Anglican Church in Durham, would be appreciated by the family.
